HF to PE

Wondering any thoughts on how to transition from HF to PE. I went straight to 20b+ AUM l/s equity fund straight from undergrad, so no transaction experience.

  1. MBA -> PE. If so what schools could provide this opportunity?
  2. MBA -> IB -> PE. What is recruiting like as an associate?
  3. Moving directly. Any anecdotal examples of this?

Would appreciate any help! Thank you!

What kind of HF is it? SM or MM? Off the bat your chances aren't amazing given PE looks for a very specific skillset of transaction execution which is offered by banking analyst programs and the type of investing for public equities is very different than what the PE guys are looking for.

That being said I don't know if it's impossible but I just haven't personally seen this move made ever but it for some reason certainly happens the other way.

Guess you couldn’t take the heat of a HF

ur gonna have a tough time going to PE with no transaction experience is the hard truth. Sorry. Go to a T10 mba, then do IB then receuit for PE

Any idea on what IB associate -> PE recruiting looks like?

Is it structured in a similar way to Analyst recruiting or is it all off-cycle?

You don’t give us enough info to answer your question in full. Are you at a MM or SM? Did you go to a target? Would you go to IB now as as an analyst? Why do you want to work in private equity? Are you okay with working at a LMM fund, or would you prefer working at BB IB?

If you’re at a MM, it’s going to be very difficult to transition directly into a sizable PE fund. Your best bet would be MBA > IB > (LMM) PE. If you’re serious about PE, I would recommend banking and then PE all without MBA

However, I would ask the question of why you want to do PE? Do you want to work on transactions instead of markets? In which case IB is a safer path. Do you want to invest for the long term with lower risk and stress? In which case a mutual fund is likely best option. Both can be achieved through MBA
