MM PE - > HF?

Title. Currently an associate 2 at a MMPE firm (1-2 BN fund size) looking to move to HF. Curious to hear those who made this jump and 1) what level did you come in 2) did you need to go to business school and 3) What type of HF did you find most transaction in processes for (understand SM is the most transferable, but seems like there’s less opportunities compared to MM)

Based on the most helpful WSO content, transitioning from MM PE to HF is a path some professionals choose to pursue, often driven by a desire for a different type of investment strategy or a change in work environment. Here’s what you need to know based on similar transitions discussed in the WSO forums:

  1. Entry Level at HF: Typically, individuals moving from a MM PE firm to a HF can enter at an analyst or associate level, depending on their experience and the specific requirements of the HF. The level you come in at can also depend on the size and structure of the hedge fund.

  2. Business School Requirement: Going to business school is not always a necessity for moving from PE to HF, but it can be beneficial. An MBA might provide broader finance knowledge, networking opportunities, and a credential that could be appealing to some hedge funds. However, many have made the transition successfully without an MBA, focusing instead on their investment track record and networking within the industry.

  3. Type of HF and Transaction Processes: Regarding the type of hedge fund that might align well with your PE experience, Single Manager HFs (SM HFs) are often noted for their transactional processes that can be similar to PE. However, as you mentioned, opportunities in SM HFs can be more limited compared to Multi-Manager HFs (MM HFs). MM HFs might offer more openings and could be a good fit, especially if you are adaptable and can handle a variety of investment strategies. They often value diverse experience and might appreciate your PE background in analyzing company fundamentals and value creation.

Networking and connecting with industry insiders through platforms like WSO can provide more personalized advice and potentially open up opportunities. It’s also beneficial to highlight your specific skills and experiences from PE that are transferable to HF roles, such as deep industry knowledge, due diligence, and financial modeling.
