Starting a fund outside the U.S.?
I'm currently in the position to join a 50/50 partner in starting an systematic futures trading fund, similar to a CTA.
A little Background:
I'm currently a VC/Growth Equity analyst and I really enjoy the position. Investing in new technology, industry research, modelling, etc. It's been a great experience, but since my last summer internship at a small quantitative AM shop I've been working with an experienced trader on his systematic trading algorithms. Obviously, I know little compared to his 30 years of experience, but he's been a mentor and I've worked to teach myself python and act as an execution trader as I automate the order execution.
We're at the point now where we're looking to establish a fund. We're working with a Maltese brokerage for the fund raising and administration. That process has been going well, but I'm 21 and have little experience dealing with something like this. My parents started a business when I was highschool and I took an active role in learning about the process of starting an LLC, but this is very different.
Overall, I'm looking forward to the opportunity and I'm leaning towards leaving PE/VC to pursue trading. I've always had a natural interest in working with the public markets, how the function, statistics, and the rest.
So my question is, has anyone here ever gone through a similar process? I'm wondering what, if anything, I should be looking out for to protect my own future. I understand it's a bit of a risk, I'm forgoing the opportunity to establish a stable career in high finance, but we have a good strategy with a good track record and fundraising is taken care of. If we do end up closing shop in a few years, am I going to be SOL when it comes to future employment?
As always, any/all advice is much appreciated.
