17 months vs 18 months

Hi all,  silly question, but I am approach 18 months of work experience but would like to leave my job asap to travel (can leave at the 17 month mark). Just wondering if the extra month is worth the 18 month mark everyone talks about or am I over thinking this

Not really a big difference maker especially if you have something lined up after.

If you are leaving with nothing lined up, you'll get questions about not completing a 2 year program and would likely have to do a lateral analyst role instead of associate. but if you've decided you're leaving, 17 vs 18 months is not a huge line to cross

If you need the 6 month break for mental health reasons, by all means go for it, that is most important

But be aware it could very well be another 4-6 months to land something once you start recruiting - finance recruiting gets a lot harder when you don't currently have a job as a junior, especially in this tighter market. Typical advice on here is to recruit now while you still have a job, and then ask for the latest start date possible (4-8 weeks usually) and travel in that time.

Following. I’m at 19th month mark myself plus had a few years non-IB transactions experience before. 100% want to quit as my current bank and realize high finance in general isn’t a good fit for me and want to quit w/o job because completely burned out and need to do soul searching. I’m trying to ride it out a few more months to hit the 2-year mark though, feel like that’ll be taken upon much more kindly by potential reviewers of my CV down the line (only really interested in corp dev or corp fin in future). Am I overthinking this too?

So another route I've seen detailed people securing their next job and have the start date pushed back 3 months. Have some breathing room between jobs

Good to know thank you, even 3 months is short though and part of why I want to quit is to soul search to think about what I truly want to do next and whether to permanently leave high finance. In a pretty weird mental state right now and that alone makes it tough to recruit while employed… really just need a break before even thinking about whats next. Assuming someone has ~5 years of exp, you think it’s ok for them to take a 1-year break before returning to job market? Not tryna return to IB or go to PE
