3.7 GPA Double Major

As an Econ/Math double major at a university with a target business school, what GPA do I need to get interviews at the elite bulge brackets like Goldman and boutiques like Evercore? I just finished up my freshman year with a 3.74 and I'm involved in 3 orgs on campus (1 finance related and 2 that are not). Would pushing for a higher GPA (3.8 overall) in the semester before recruitment begins really going to help me that much?

That's pretty solid for a target school; a 3.74 in econ/math will definitely get you first-rounds, assuming you network, get through Hireview, etc. Of course, push to boost your GPA some more (especially given you haven't gotten to higher level math courses where your GPA might potentially take a hit, i.e. Analysis, PDEs, etc.) but I wouldn't sweat not getting interviews. Most BBs have their unofficial min at 3.5 and boutiques 3.6-3.7. Try and go through some technical prep this summer and you'll be golden.

How would you recommend going about the technical prep? I have the BIWS guide and Rosenbaum/Pearl book. Which one of these do you recommend I go through first? I've also haven't taken any accounting or finance classes (given that I'm an econ/math student), so I'm worrying that I might have some trouble grasping some of the concepts.

Do the BIWS guide first, then Rosenbaum. You have enough time to go through both; they are both pretty straightforward resources. Rosenbaum is a little too in-depth to really be read straight through, but a great way to brush up on a topic in detail.

If you can have rock solid answers to:

  1. Walk me through your resume

  2. Why banking / why our bank

  3. Walk me through a DCF

  4. Tell me the impact of ______ (usually Depreciation increases/decreases by 10) on the 3 financial statements

  5. Tell me about the different ways to value a company

You will be a long way towards being able to do well in interviews.

Make sure you are spending time networking with alums at all the banks to make sure you actually get the interviews.

'involvement' don't metter, it's about what you do/what your title is, you want to look prestigious, general member isn't prestigious, not to say you can start off as the president just something to think about

I don’t get why people ask if they should push for a higher GPA - duh you should, give yourself every edge you can get. It’s not like you’re picking classes saying “I will work on this class for 8 hours each week to receive a B, this class 11 hours for an A-“
