6-7 Brain Rot in IB Internship, Am I cooked?

Earlier this week, my analyst asked me to shell out a deck. It wasn't anything crazy, and he said it'd probably be just 6-7 slides. When he said 6-7, I tried to hold in my laugh but let out a little chuckle. He was getting crushed that day and was not having it, so he asked me why I was laughing. I tried saying "nothing", but he kept insisting on knowing what about that was so funny, so I finally told him it was the 6-7/mustard memes I've been seeing on my Instagram reels. He did not like that and gave me a serious talk about how my professionalism in the office is lacking, and how I need to stay off my phone so much.

I've been thinking about this more and more over the weekend, and I'm seriously concerned about the possibility of a return offer. Considering we're halfway through the internship, am I done for, or is there still time to turn things around?

You’re definitely been unprofessional several times before for him to talk to you about this. If it’s that easy to make you laugh from6-7, you’ve definitely been laughing at other serious times, making off hand remarks, sharing unprofessional stories, not understanding hierarchy, drinking too much at events, etc

Analysts need to stop power-tripping. I get this could be unprofessional in a serious setting but I see no reason why analysts act all hardo as if they aren’t just 2 years older and laughing at the same things outside of work. The jobs already tough no need to make interns feel like they can’t be themselves and shoot a little shit with the only peers closest to their age.

Life is all about context and understanding your situation in the room. His analyst was getting crushed, and he's an intern being judged on everything he does for the summer before he either gets an offer or doesn't. He chose wrong. That's like laughing at a funeral when no one else is laughing. You gotta read the room and make the right judgment calls.

you might be the biggest tard I've seen. Pack up your stuff, say goodbye to that return offer and start networking for FT

Also, your story is user-specific so if that analyst ever comes back before the end of the internship cycle and visits this very post, your even more cooked.

Honestly, I think you are overthinking a bit. Its nothing really bad and the only issue was apparentlly, that he/she wasnt having it based on the workload. Just try to still deliver with your work and no one will think about that again.

I’m starting to develop a mixed view on these things

On one hand you want to persevere and try to get the offer by all means necessary. Do not let some loser take you out of the game

On the other hand sometimes these things are a sign of low culture fit and you’d be better elsewhere

On the whole I’m coming to the conclusion is all anarchy.  Work hard for the rest of the summer and see if you can get a return

If you don’t then maybe it’s good riddance anyways

The “6-7” TikTok trend revolves around the drill rap song “Doot Doot” by Skrilla.

TikTok and Instagram Reels quickly popularized the track, driven by its recurring lyric, “6-7.” Many believe the phrase references 67th Street in Chicago, potentially linking it to Skrilla’s background or affiliations. The song’s lyrics emphasize street life and conflicts, repeatedly mentioning “6-7” throughout the track.

The trend became widely associated with basketball player LaMelo Ball. One of the earliest known viral edits reportedly featured a sports commentator stating that Ball plays like a 6’1″ player despite being 6’7″. The term “6’7″” aligns with the song’s beat drop, making it a key moment in the meme format. This sparked a wave of videos where TikTokers edited footage of Ball, with the song playing in the background.

Beyond basketball, TikTok users applied the “6-7” trend to various scenarios, often using the song’s lyrics humorously. Some videos feature users referencing their 67% test scores, followed by the song playing in their heads. The meme format expanded into lip dubs, NBA-related edits, and other comedic content.

Reading this thread makes me want desparately to get to the point where I'm senior enough that I don't have to deal with analysts directly.

To be clear, whatever chain of events you just described should have no bearing on whether you get a return offer, but damn... I'm too old to even try to understand half of what is written here.

The MD will understand. Just start singing tralalero tralala at the next company event.

You’ll get the return offer and all the smokeshows will chase after you.

Seriously, either you’re a prick or the analyst is totally unlikeable. You either were being super disrespectful subconsciously or he’s just being super unprofessional when lecturing an intern.

Also, tbh analyst life is hard. Def cut him some slack and apologize if you haven’t already.

you are cooked bro. If that brain rot meme is enough for you to laugh when you’re being tasked an assignment, you’re not fit to handle any serious conversations/ work

Reminds me of when I accidentally had myself unmuted on a teams call with my group head and he was talking about his “partner” because he was gay and my Tourettes kicked in and I let out an “AYO.” Still got the return but definitely grinded harder than I planned after this.

Honestly, in my opinion, if he had to push you aside and talk to you about it, it's definitely because he's seen your potential lack of attention or appropriate behavior around the workplace in general. I would say you just simply apologize and just work hard and keep networking for the rest of the summer to secure that summer internship.

Analyst probably saved your chances of getting a return. Take the advice and be better. There's still almost half the summer to go, get the work done and get off your phone you'll be okay.

Honestly, one awkward moment doesn’t define your whole internship — especially if the rest of your work has been solid. That said, this could be a great wake-up call. Focus on showing you're dependable, professional, and eager to learn for the rest of the internship. Be proactive, double-check your work, and avoid giving any more reasons for doubt. People remember how you finish just as much as how you start — so it’s not over unless you let it be.
