Accounting major from a non-target, possible at all? Southeast USA market
Hey all,
I'm an Accounting and CIS double major at a nontarget school in the Southeast (highly ranked Accounting program)
I've currently got a Tax Internship lined up with one of the Big 4 for this summer but have been interested in careers in Finance. I didn't want to pursue a BBA in Finance as I always thought IB was almost unattainable from a nontarget, but I've heard some motivational success stories and I wanted to inquire further.
This being said, where should I begin research on the different types of careers in Finance? I understand that not being a finance major and not attending a target school pretty much entirely disqualifies me from the big banks in New York, but how about some of the smaller banks in Atlanta or the Carolinas?
My GPA is alright but nothing stellar at a 3.62 and may drop a tiny bit this semester. I plan on going into this internship and killing it, I just want to see if IB would even be a possibility in my situation and which types of banks I could look into, network with, and apply to.
Thank you all in advance!
Don't bother applying online because most banks will likely just ignore your resume, and I say this from experience. Your best bet is to cold email or try and find warm introductions to speak with people at boutique investment banks and express your interest in the career because XYZ. My cold email template is below. I emailed 20+ people a day and ended up emailing around 500-600 people (send tuesday - thursday around 1PM-3PM EST). Follow up after one week. Good luck.
Hello person,
My name is NAME and I am emailing you with hopes of obtaining information, and perhaps a few minutes of your day in the near future with regards to analyst positions at IB. I have years of experience in financial modelling and valuations, and think that I could be a strong asset to IB. I've attached my resume in case you have any interest in learning more about my background.
Please let me know if you have any time over the next week to chat either in person or over the phone, and I would be happy to make myself available.
Best, NAME Phone
Btw terrible cold email format:
My name is XXX, a student graduating XXXX SEMESTER with dual degrees in XXX and XXXX from the XXXi.
I am currently working at XXXX (a XXX investment bank) as a XXX intern. I am interested in XXXX and I am eager to learn as much as possible about the industry. I noticed on LinkedIn that you were XXXXX and was hoping we could connect to talk about your experience at XXXX.
Would you be available anytime this week or next week to set up a call? I have attached my resume for your reference.
