Advice for a Law Student
I am currently in my second year of law school and I received a finance degree in undergrad. I'm looking to apply for some upcoming Investment Banking internships but need to brush up. I was thinking about buying the WSP course, does anyone have any experience with that / is there a benefit to completing it?
I'd appreciate any additional advice for securing an interview as well. I'm mostly on my own here (I'm not personally aware of anyone making the jump from law school to IB, although I know it's possible) and I haven't had any luck by cold-call networking yet. Thanks in advance.
Met an alum from my non-target school who was a paralegal and took time to transfer to an associate role in MM secondaries. It's possible, other than general advice of applying to positions and using Linkedin/alum career services to network with those at the firm you're applying to.
Thanks for answering. It's reassuring to hear other have done something similar. I like the idea about Linkedin, I need to lean into that more. What do you mean by MM secondaries?
Sorry, middle market firm, he works in the secondary advisory group (advising LPs that want to buy and sell stakes in PE firms).
Great, thank you.
Just curious why investment banking vs corporate law? You can do M&A with both just one is the financial advisor on deals and the other is the legal advisor. Both will pay six figures and have similar hours so what’s the IB draw for you?
I most likely missed the boat on Big Law. I want to end up in NYC and most of the firms that came to OCI weren't hiring for that city. One firm even dropped my interview the night before (I'm assuming they read my cover letter and learned I didn't want to be in Chicago.) That got me thinking about alternatives. I've always been interested in Investment Banking and learned that they have positions for people with JDs so I figured I'd apply to those as well as law firms.
