Advice for someone pivoting into Finance. UNSW vs USYD Master of Commerce (Extension)

Hi all!

I hope some of you on the forum are familiar with the courses as well both the universities. The situation currently is I've been accepted into UNSW, University of Queensland and University of Adelaide all with scholarship for this program within a week but rejected from USYD after a month. Having graduated with a business management degree from a relatively no-name university in England (Royal Holloway, Uni of London), I wanted to at least have one of my two universities be a recognisable name (USYD). Absolutely gutted to that, as well as the campus of UNSW looks doom & gloom and the location doesn't seem to have many rentals either. Add to it trimesters (UNSW) vs semesters (USYD) may make for a more rushed learning environment.

My questions to you all are:

1. Will it be possible to transfer from UNSW to USYD? If so, how quickly should I be aiming to do that? How would it play out logistically and in terms of payments I will have made to the university?

2. Which will be the better university to attend? I was planning on a double specialisation in Finance & Fintech at UNSW vs Finance & Data Analytics at USYD. Currently unsure how difficult a double specialisation would be, but considering it's my last chance to pivot my career (I'm 25 with two years experience as a marketing manager for a large agrochemical company, and some experience in Operations helping them expand to new markets).

3. I've consciously chosen a 2 year degree in Australia over a 1 year degree in the UK (effectively 9 months when all said and done), specifically so I can have enough time to learn Finance, get relevant work experience via internships and possibly do my CFA L1 to get my fundamentals right. What would you recommend are some things I should absolutely do during my first year to set myself up for success upon graduating? I.e, grades I should maintain, societies to join, by when I should have my internships and what internships I should be applying for? And anything else you could think of.

4. I understand it will be inherently harder as a 27 year old graduate with 2 YOE in Marketing to break into IB, but will it be possible? Prior to undergrad, I was pursuing professional football in the UK, I'm all for working as hard as it takes but I also want to be realistic. Main question here is what other adjacent careers should I be aiming for from which I could transfer?

5. Any general or specific advice on learning, networking in Sydney, internships, specific skills I should develop, how I should approach pivoting into finance would be very welcome!

Thanks!
New Monkey

If you don’t have the right to work in Aus don’t bother going, no uni will help you get a job!!

go to a target/semi uni in the UK or European two year programs for best odds at breaking into IB

Hey! Update: got an internship at a PE fund and a 75 distinction! Terrified of starting next month with only one term of finance knowledge. Any tips? I’ve started the WSO excel crash course, and after this wondering what I should be doing next
