Advice - Incoming IB analyst

Hey guys, first post here. Recently secured an investment banking internship at a MM/Mid Cap investment bank called Numis Securities. Studying Chem with Maths at a target university in UK. Any advice on how to best prepare myself for the internship?

I'm just assuming that you'd like general advice as to how to succeed during your internship?

Here's a few tips:

  1. Whenever you have a conversation with anyone who is not a fellow analyst, make sure you bring a pen, paper, and potentially a calculator. I'd recommend the HP12c calculator. This way, what the MD/Director/VP/associate tells you won't be lost on you when you get back to your desk, and if they convey information to you that is not purely instructional, then you'll have written down their tidbit of wisdom.
  2. If someone asks for something or you think of something you need to do, and it takes less than 5 minutes, do it immediately. That way, you won't forget to do it - which could unravel into something worse if you do end up forgetting to do it.
  3. Keep your head down. No one likes an arrogant analyst and you're here to learn from the others around you.
  4. Keep a consistent stream of conversation between you and the people who are responsible for you. If your workstream allows it, ask others how you can help. If you're on a project and haven't heard anything from anyone in a while, check in. That way, they know that you're on top of the project if something comes up. Frequently, an associate may push something aside and that email that you send them may help them get back on track.
  5. Keep your folders and your inbox organized. Make folders in your inbox and segregate your emails based on what project you're currently working on. That way, you can pull information you may need or forward emails more easily.

In the end, what people will look for is your willingness to learn, your attentiveness, and how on-top of your tasks you are. Use the people around you for help and don't be afraid to ask questions that may sound stupid. Much better to ask a stupid question that you're unsure about than make a much larger mistake because you didn't ask the stupid question in the first place.
