Alum invited me to his office
I emailed an alum and he invited me to visit his office. Hes a pretty senior guy, and he said he could give me a tour of the place. How should I play this? Obviously I'll look sharp, smile a lot, try and be friendly and everything. Should I go out of my way to meet everyone I can? Should I approach it like an interview? How long should I stick around? 20-30 minutes? If theres another alum working at the same office, should I try and reach out and meet him there as well?
are you socially challenged? do you need someone to tell you how to behave? holy fuck youre gonna have some problems in life if you cant sort out small things like this.
Im sure your friend will introduce you to everyone he wants to meet.
Ask your friend if there are any other alums and ask if you can meet him/her.
Just be friendly, interested, etc.
@rainmaker: That's just unnecessary.
Definitely ask about others but don't forget to thank him for the opportunity afterwards. Alums love to feel important.
You sound pretty excited about this so my only real advice would be to take a deep breath, count to ten, and calm down. The more relaxed you are the easier this will be and the better impression you will make.
Also agree with seedy underbelly and okay24 just be relaxed and friendly.
I think its OK to ask about other alumni but I would mainly focus on the guy who has brought you there. If the other alumni work alongside the guy who invited you then it is fine. I've been in this type of situation before and I recommend showing a concentrated interest in the your alums specific area of work. This will let him know you are focused and that you know what you want to do. I think this is more applicable if you are looking for an internship right away or for a full time job. If you are younger or don't need a job in the immediate future then it should be fine to ask about other alumni and other areas within the bank.
You don't need to play it like a formal interview but obviously more like an informational interview. Obviously you should know all finance basics and just learn as much as you can about the bank. To go along with what I said before you should definitely prepare some good questions to show your interest. Other than that like you said just look sharp, be friendly, etc.
Good luck man.
