Amherst/Williams College, LACs - HONEST THOUGHTS

See lots of disagreement on how good these are. With A/W are they actually good? On the decline? As good for buy side as sell side? Only good for nepo, diversity, athlete? Possible to get into HF/PE straight out of undergrad? Honest thoughts from alums and people on the street would be greatly appreciated!

a lot of us are non-nepo, some of us just are good at networking, and obv some of us have super strong connections. playing a sport def helps considerably, but anyone can place anywhere from amherst.

just have fun and don't be a hardo, you'll place from any good school as long as you're proactive

I’m sorry man, but I went to Williams and this is just ridiculous. Glad you had a good experience, but the alums mostly pull for their teams and the majority of the placements are through nepotism

Damn, sorry about that. I didn't go to an LAC, but that's always been my own experience working with people from Williams or Amherst.

majority of the placements are through nepotism

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but that's literally all of traditional finance, especially since 2023 when hiring got harder and more people tried entering with fewer seats. If you don't like that, I guess go be a quant or something. Only so much meritocracy when the entry level roles are basically just making excel models

They're literally same tier as Ivy leagues. That's just statistically true. Williams especially, their grads pull HARD for networking and who gets super days.

Same as ivies hahaha congrats on swarthmore bro

Nearly Ivy League level, with much less competition on campus. Much better than the target state schools, in my opinion. Understand: you have a, let's say, ~30k-person pool at a top state school with ~0.3% getting offers vs much more at Amherst, etc...

Depends on personality I’d argue, they are definitely super prestigious and have better brands than state schools, but for a hardworking kid who really cares about the process somewhere like Ross clears A/W

Most of the "only nepo/diversity/athlete" comments are about Williams; that is not nearly as much of an issue at Amherst. The lack of internal competition makes it a much more chill process than at most other targets, though you probably won't get MFPE or top Rx (however, EB M&A and GS/MS/JPM all are relatively common outcomes)
