Analyst Work Load

Incoming Analyst wondering when work starts to pick up for A1’s.

I’m moving into an apartment in September-ish and want to gauge how busy I’ll be then (do analysts get staffed on busy deals right away or is then still apart of the adjustment period?)

Also helpful to know if anyone’s moved at a similar time period and how that went (search process, moving, buying furniture, etc.). Seems like a broker would be most helpful to find an apartment given banking hours

A few questions in one but hopefully someone can give insight that’s been through the process

Based on previous WSO threads, here's what you need to know:

Analyst Workload and Onboarding

  • Initial Period: The ramp-up period for full-time analysts can vary. Some analysts may go months before getting meaningful work, while others might be staffed on live deals immediately after training. This adjustment period can depend on the firm's specific practices and the current deal flow.
  • Busy Deals: During the summer associate period, interns are often sent to live deals right away due to the tight evaluation window. However, for full-time analysts, the onboarding period might be longer.

Moving and Apartment Search

  • Timing: Moving in September can be a busy time, but it is manageable with proper planning.
  • Broker Assistance: Given the demanding hours in banking, using a broker can be very helpful in finding an apartment. Brokers can streamline the search process, handle negotiations, and assist with paperwork, which can save you significant time and stress.
  • Furniture and Setup: Plan ahead for buying furniture and setting up your apartment. Consider ordering essentials online to save time and ensure everything is ready when you move in.

Additional Tips

  • Dynamic Modeling: Always model dynamically and simply if possible. This will make it easier to quickly make edits and adapt a model to the current aspects of a deal.
  • Daily Routine: Expect your day to start calmly but pick up significantly by mid-morning. Prioritize tasks by time sensitivity to stay ahead, especially near quarter-end.

By keeping these points in mind, you can better manage your transition into the role and your move into a new apartment.
