im looking at around £1200 per month for a zone 2 place.
You wanna save money? You prepared to live in an area of London that is not quite full of street cafes and professionals?
I pay £675/month in E11 (5 stations from Bank on the Central Line - door to door commute to my office in Bank is 25 minutes). Area that I live in is predominantly young family/Asian (as in Indian/Pakistani/Bangladeshi)/South African/East European - not dangerous, and pretty much an upper working class to middle class neighbourhood - however these are the suburbs, so drawbacks as follows:
1) Cab home takes 30-35 minutes (so that is commute time most weeks {as near enough every day is a post 11pm finish})
2) Entertainment in such areas is sparse
3) Lack of like minded people can be a problem (there will only be a few other ppl in IB etc etc) - therefore can be lonely
Advantages:
1) You save bucks!
2) You actually get nice places for the money - I rent a recently refurbished 1 bed flat which would cost me upwards of £1,200 a month in Zones 1 and 2
3) Areas are quiet - this is good on those weekends when you have a chance to recover (and therefore are able to sleep in peace on a Sat/Sun morning)
4) Suburbs of E London are underpriced given the accessibility to Canary Wharf and the City
Hope this helps. I would however only recommend considering some of the areas in Zones 3/4 however as some of these areas are 'rough' - let me know if you want to find out more
From the ghetto....
Is Bow a really bad area? There seem to be affordable new flats there, and the Bow Church DLR station is attractive, as it's apparently 12 minutes from Bow Church to Canary Wharf.
Only parts of Bow are ok - if you can get a flat in a gated development then that should be fine. I wouldn't live in Bow otherwise.
Whitechapel is better. Bethnal Green is comparable.
Aldgate is the same.
I live in Leytonstone and have friends in Wanstead - admittedly we are 15-20 mins from Bank on the Central Line but it is much safer than Bow/Stepney/Bethnal Green/Aldgate/Whitechapel etc etc (particularly Upper Leytonstone and Wanstead) - the reason for living further out - rent is a LOT cheaper.
From the ghetto....
I just got an offer in London -as an associate. I live in the UK, but not in London, with my girlfriend and we would like to move there together. What would be the best zones, which don't eat up my salary, and are safe for a couple, ie for her whenever I am working late? I was looking up some websites and it seems that one could get 2-bedrooms flats in Swiss Cottage or St. John's Wood for about £1000-£1500 on the lower end of the spectrum. Living in Canary Wharf seems freaking boring. I also enjoy Notting Hill a lot, but I think that may be too costly for a 1st year assoc. Being not a Londoner, I would like to know your thoughts. So, which zones would you recommend?
Anyone lives walking distance to work?
My buddy and I will be working around Liverpool St. / Moorgate Stations. What is the availability of reasonably priced, decent 2-bedroom apartments that are walking distance to these stations?
Thanks
I have a friend living in Islington, 10 minute bus ride to Moorgate. I think he pays £1100 for a one-bedroom.
ilsington seems good for people who work in the City... does anyone knows where most Canary Wharf analysts live?
