anyone applied to SSN since COVID?

Hi Monkeys,

Need your help. I am an international student who will do SA this coming summer. I have not been able to apply for SSN since last March (when offices were closed) and I am starting to worry about how to apply for SSN since offices are closed. Did anyone apply online? Did your office take an in-person appointment? Or eventually, can you do a SA without SSN?

Thanks a lot

I am an international student that was an SA this summer. I was similarly concerned since the SSA offices were closed. However I believe they are still processing on a case by case basis even though per se the offices are still closed. I called my local office and they told me to mail in all the documents and I was able to receive my SSN within ~2 weeks of applying.

wow, did you email your passport. I was told never to email it. Thanks anyway

F1 status can apply for SSN after a minimum of 10 days of physical presence in the USA (and not earlier than 30 days before starting employment, I believe)

SSA requries, afaik:

Passport, I-20, all valid I94 documents (online), employment paperwork, and all authorization for OPT/CPT/EAD/hardship waivers

all of this should be explained by the intl. student office, but I guess they are all virtual now?

Can I ask you something?  I did an internship last summer and got cpt but I dld not apply to ssn. Can I apply for a ssn now (I don't have any jobs lined up now)?

I had the same situation. Call your local SSN office and they’ll schedule an appointment and make sure to ask them what paperwork you need to bring.
