Anyone here in IB started on H1B?
Was wondering if anyone here in US IB started with H1B from a non-US uni (no OPT)?
Had a 1st round with HR at an EB today. Went really good, asked for my availabilites next week to set up interviews with bankers.
Then when found out later I needed H1B (Canadian uni but non-North American citizenship), used the "our H1B list for this cycle are already fixed" response. When I know people who started process in Dec/Jan early this year, got an H1B, and have started their work this month in HFs.
All IB people in my network started with TN. Wanted to hear your experience if you started out on H1B.
Based on the most helpful WSO content, it seems that starting in US Investment Banking (IB) with an H1B visa from a non-US university can be a bit challenging. It's not impossible, but it does require some strategic planning and networking.
From what I've seen, many firms do sponsor H1B visas, but the process can be quite competitive and the number of visas available each year is limited. It's also important to note that the process can be time-consuming and requires the firm to invest resources, which might explain why some firms have a fixed list for their H1B cycle.
However, I've also seen cases where international analysts at certain EBs were able to transfer to overseas offices after their OPTs expired or they were unable to obtain an H1B.
In terms of your experience with the HR at the EB, it's possible that their H1B list for this cycle was indeed already fixed. However, don't let this discourage you. Keep building relationships and networking, as this can open up opportunities down the line.
Remember, every journey is unique and what worked for one person might not work for another. Keep exploring your options and stay positive!

following, I'm also a non-canadian/non-us citizen at a canadian target. Im still in first year but its unclear to me how US recruiting would play out for me
If you already have h1b and it is just a matter of transferring, I don’t think its that hard.
But if you need the company to sponsor you and go through the lottery process, getting them sponsoring you is unlikely.
2024 lottery chance was 10% and the sponsoring company will most likely not willing to take the risk.
If the sponsoring firm wants to hire you and give you a shot - they will have to file you for h1b lottery / petition in March and under the premium processing, you will hear back in 10 days. Once approved, your h1b kicks in October so that is most likely when you will start working. Would the company wait for you for 7+ months and take the risk? Or bring in other American talent?
Recruiting in Canada might be a better option here.
