how all the snotty ignorant kids on this board continually diss and dismiss any firm outside of GS, MS, etc. The reality is that, yes, Wachovia is a "second tier" firm...but so what? Your compensation as an analyst/associate will be exactly the same. In addition, you will have the opportunity to work in an aggresive environment for a firm that is climbing up the ranks. And after a couple of years you will have no problem jumping to GS, MS, etc. if you are talented.

Given that I have accepted my offer at Wachovia for a variety of reasons and that I recognize its second tier status, which group should I try to be in to maximize my exit opportunities at midsize PE firms or boutique banks? I was thinking lev fin, but I wanted to hear what those who actually had knowledge of these groups thought.
Unlike a lot of monkeys out there, I don't want to work for KKR or Blackstone after my two years is up. I'd ultimately like to get some operational experience.
if you are going to be at Wachovia, you might as well be in a group that takes advantage of its b alance sheet...also they have gotten some ok placement from their lev fin group. at least you won't have to overpay for everything while living in new york
I agree. Wachovia has a strong position in syndications due to its commercial lending heritage. If there is any area where Wachovia should gain momentum as they try to become a respectable IB, I would guess lev fin is the area.
This is one area where you can hope that people there know what their doing.
i've said this elsewhere...don't underestimate charlotte in terms of the crazy amounts you can save there. i know a few ppl who work down there. you can get a 1 bedroom in a building with free parking,gym and a pool for 800/month.
