Anyone know how to create an Excel plug-in?

I want to make a plug-in for Excel that will automatically load anytime Excel loads... much like the Capital IQ plug-in or other Excel plug-ins.

The main purpose is so I can format my speadsheets without having to do it manually every time. It drives me fucking crazy.

I'd also like to error trap my formulas. So right now, I'll sometimes write a macro so I can select a range and run the macro and it will convert every formula in that range to:

=IF(IsErr(original_formula), "n/a", original_formula)

Saves me the hassle of having to type it manually and pasting formulas... which often isnt possible if you're referencing absolute cells.

So there must be a way to convert a macro to a permanently embedded Excel Plug-In feature. Anyone know how?

save the macro as an excel add-in .xlam file for office 2007 or .xla for 2003

next go to excel options then add-ins and move the macro add-in to active application add-ins from inactive application add-ins using the manage and go button at the bottom

finally, go to customize and create a shortcut for it so it sits in the toolbar

what it says above, just make sure you save it in the default location. you should be taken to this default folder when you choose .xla as the file format.

also, for the purpose you described, i use a different function in which the original formula only appears once - makes it a bit easier to change if necessary, and avoids maximum formula length limits (pre-2007). so i suggest making a user-defined function that will allow you to get the same result, but will look like

=killerror([original formula],"n/a")

use vba to imply to use the original formula if it does not result in an error.

hope that makes sense.

i did a pug-in for my team... it is so cool, if you put =dollar(yyymmdd) it gives you the value of the dollar for that day (and other currencies, and some inflation related "currencies" we use in here, very useful). right now it has like 30 functions and macros
