Applying Early for SA 2025?

Hi -- I just wanted some input!

Is it worth applying early for Houlihan Lokey, Rothschild, Deutsche Bank, etc.? I know some apps close soon anyway, but I was wondering if it's worth holding off until after the New Year for networking purposes, or is submitting the app --> then networking a better route?

Thanks! Wishing you a wonderful New Year full of joy and success! :)

Hey there! Happy to shed some light on this for you.

Applying early can definitely have its advantages. Here's why:

  • Early Bird Gets the Worm: Some firms operate on a rolling basis, meaning they review applications as they come in. Getting your application in early can sometimes give you a leg up, especially if the firm starts to fill positions before the official deadline.
  • Proactive Impression: Applying early can also signal to employers that you're proactive and highly interested in the opportunity.
  • Networking Leverage: If you apply early, you can use the fact that you've applied as a talking point in your networking efforts. It shows you're serious about the firm and can lead to more meaningful conversations.

However, don't rush your application. Make sure:

  • Quality Over Speed: Your application is polished and represents your best effort. It's better to take a little extra time to ensure your resume and cover letter are error-free and tailored to the firm.
  • Networking First?: If you feel networking prior to application could significantly strengthen your application (e.g., getting a referral), then it might be worth considering. But this is a delicate balance and often a judgment call.

In the case of firms like Houlihan Lokey and Rothschild, which you mentioned, and others like Deutsche Bank, it's important to consider their specific recruiting timelines and processes. If they have a history of early recruitment, it's wise not to delay.

And hey, thanks for the New Year wishes! Right back at you – may your applications be successful and your networking efforts fruitful! 🎉
