Applying to Multiple Groups at Same Firm?
Is there any potential downside to applying to multiple group at one firm for a lateral hire?
I could see why it would be also as an analyst they can’t really expect you to be all in on a group you statistically won’t get an offer from
Does the answer change between EB and BB?
Would assume it could hurt at an EB with smaller HR departments vs. BBs with larger HR departments it’s unlikely the same person is looking at resumes
I don't think it would hurt at a BB, not sure at an EB. If they ask, just be honest and say you really want to work in IB and really want to work at that firm, and know that your odds of success are higher if you interview with multiple groups. I had this exact experience where I was trying to lateral after my sophomore internship and was looking at two different groups (two different groups than were I did my internship, this was not IB). One group absolutely grilled me about "not feeling the love" etc. They seemed to be playing it up so hard I actually started chuckling. At the end off the interview they said, "we are glad you were able to take the heat. Lots of kids just cower and stop talking." Neither of those two groups took me hahahah. Anyway, moral of the story is some groups will care, others won't. I would apply to both groups if I were you.
I’m a first year trying to lateral from a lower BB up market so slight different situation but definitely appreciate the insight as I’m sure it’s pretty similar at first year and intern level
I also forgot...at the BB I work at currently, we have a fair number of corporate banker internal transfers. They all had applied to multiple groups before ending up where they did - though not at the same time.
you at citi by any chance?
