Ask to see resume?
I've done a fair amount (not A LOT but a fair amount) of informational interviews in the past year (50+). I have an informational interview coming up recently in which the employee asked me to forward my resume to him before we speak. I am an undergrad. I've never seen this happen-has this happened to anyone else before and what does this indicate? This is NOT an alumni btw. It is a random connection I found by asking friends.
Yes - its just for them to get some additional background on you.
I'm surprised it hasn't happened yet. I often offer my resume when reaching out to people.
Maybe he wants to give you advice on your resume beside just wanting to see who you are on paper beforehand. If your informational interview has yet to be set up, then it seems like he intends to decide whether or not he meets you based on your resume. But upon reading your post again, that's not the case. Relax, it's not a big deal.
It is not a huge deal, but a good one. If your resume is solid then he will give probably give you some thought. Most of the informational interviews that I have done ended up with I do not think you have sent me your resume please do so and I will forward it along to HR. I think he is doing so to get an idea of who you are and give him some additional background on yourself.
Good luck
It's fairly common. I never attached or directly offered a resume to networking contacts, and they frequently asked for a copy before a first phone call.. it just makes it easier for them to get a sense of who you are, where you're coming from, and how they can help you.
You've done 50+ informational interviews and none of them have asked for your resume yet? He just wants to see what you're about and what you've done. No big deal.
(By the way, since when does 50+ informationals in a year not constitute "a lot"?)
Most people didn't care because I was a freshman at a super non-target last year. If anything they would tell me to keep in touch, and rarely ask me to see a resume AFTER the informational interview but not before.
A note: I hope you're not all calling them "informational interviews" to your contacts. In my experience, depending on the case, it can come across as too formal/stiff. Call it what it is, a "quick chat" about his (a) experiences, and (b) advice for you. (Of course, also including the (c) subtext of feeling you to determine if he wants to support your application)
He's making sure that you're not a complete waste of his time..relax.
