Athletics after IBD Summer
I'm sure there are plenty of former collegiate athletes on here who have completed a summer internship in IB, and I'd like to hear some stories about how your season went coming off of that summer/how you handled the difficulty of maintaining training. This is probably much more prevalent for sports that compete right away in the fall, but either way I'm in that position myself and would appreciate some input on how other people approached it.
I played soccer in college and had an IB internship the summer before my senior year... I was working pretty long hours and sitting in a chair all day. I played for a semi-pro team that summer where we played 2 games over the weekend. I would then run on my own during the week late at night. To be honest, I didn't put as much preparation into the weekend games as I should have - I ended up tearing my hamstring that summer and going into preseason in college just coming off of that injury. That senior season, I ended up tearing both hamstrings (one was imbalanced while the other was torn so it eventually got messed up as well). Needless to say, I didn't have a fantastic senior season and ended up only playing 15 games.
If I could do it over again, I would have done more sport-specific training during the summer to get my muscles up to speed since I was sitting in a chair all day during the week and then jumping straight into it during the weekend games.
Wow, that is rough to say the least...
Blew out my shoulder Fall season (tennis) and never recovered from that the entire rest of the season. Problem was I basically never practiced and then I worked out semi-regularly but the gym in my apartment wasn't great.
Would've joined a real gym and done more sport-specific training just like 808s and then practiced more than 2 or 3 times the entire summer if I could do it again.
In the middle of this right now as a DIII soccer player doing my junior year SA stint. Got pretty lucky with the bank that I ended up at in terms of hours, so it's definitely doable. My group here is really understanding and as long as I get my work done I can do whatever (helps if you can get a group with former athletes). Usually leave the office around 6:30 and practice with a semipro team or the same club's youth team 3 days a week. That said, those days I usually get into the office around 7. Also play on the weekends, and then every day I'm lifting and running. 24hr gym is key, and also have 24hr access to a turf field/track at the university I'm rooming at.
I will say, however, that it is incredibly hard to go workout or play after sitting in a chair staring at a screen all day on minimal sleep. I've never really been into the whole preworkout supplement thing before, but this summer I have to take something to force myself to lift/run. Main problem is then I have trouble falling asleep at night after (obvious solution is to get up early and do it in the morning, but I don't have that type of discipline). I also notice that my performance is significantly worse on days I have work compared to days I don't, which doesn't matter so much with the youth team but it's not great when I'm playing with the semipro team.
Another very difficult part of the situation is transportation. Don't have a car where I am, and that means that every day I play I'm usually wasting two hours on public transit. If you know in advance where you'll be and have a team lined up I would say do whatever possible to limit transit time.
Also, this might be obvious, but you will have literally 0 time or energy for anything besides work and sport. I don't go out on the weekends, don't hang out with people outside of soccer, and generally lead an extremely boring life. Definitely a sacrifice, but I love the sport so that helps. Also the motivation to win a title my senior year really helps, especially after having missed last two seasons with injury.
There were some older guys on the team before me though that just didn't come back to play again senior year because they couldn't cut it in terms of fitness after a summer of brutal hours. I think it really depends on the situation, and could go either way. However, I do think that if you have enough motivation it is possible. You might not have your best preseason and early season following, but you should be able to set yourself up well enough that once you get back to school things will work out.
