Awkward summer analyst

Currently I'm doing my internship and I get along really well with my intern class but not so much with the full time analysts/associates. Recently we had a teamwide social and I felt super awkward trying to make small talk and it was honestly really boring. I feel like I made a bad impression and am concerned I won't get a return bc cultural fit. What to do?

FWIW, the question of fit is more of a “is this person an AH / hardo / etc.” as opposed to “is this person going to be best friends with the whole team?” Frankly work is still work, and while it’s great to be able to riff with your coworkers during late nights, it’s not what you’re there to do. People who don’t get return offers because of fit normally has to do with the following:

  • doesn’t take pride in their work and doesn’t take ownership of what they’re given. You don’t have to be a total hardo, but respecting other’s time by taking your best shot on what you’re assigned goes a long way. It’s easy to tell when an intern phones it in, and honestly it’s just not that hard to grind for 10 weeks to show you care
  • overconfidence paired with ineptitude. Yea, we get it, you can answer some interview questions after memorizing the guides. This doesn’t make you special, it means you cleared a basic hurdle on your way in. Have some humility when you hit the desk and recognize that you have no actual experience - you are here to learn and show that you are trustworthy
  • on the flip side, a complete lack of confidence is also bad. There’s a balance to be struck, but when you are given responsibility and you do well with that, you should be confident to take your work to the next level. A humble confidence goes a long way and plays into being trustworthy / reliable

So I get it, happy hours are awkward and can be boring. Some people love staying out and others prefer to Irish exit after 30 minutes - neither preference correlates with being successful. Take your internship experience as an opportunity to acquire basic professional skills, meet with smart people at high levels in their fields, and showcase your appetite for learning and being helpful. You’ll be fine. Also, have fun :). It’s hard work but hopefully it’ll be a rewarding and positive experience.
