Barclays Tech? Thoughts?
Recruiting for SA 22 right now & my school has an alumni in the group. Recently talked to them and they seemed nice. Any WSO insights on the group? Obviously it's not Qatalyst or something, but any insight is appreciated

bump - according to wso, the culture in nyc tech is pretty bad and sweaty, is this still true with the new head moving from CRG? also talked to analysts from the group and they all seem very nice
Good culture, especially compared to tech groups at peers, but all top tech groups are sweaty given deal volume.
none of the Barclays groups have toxic culture like the stories of some banks you read about on WSO. Tech is known to have bad hours, but most of the coverage groups will be pretty bad since they all have good deal flow. more dependent on fit, but wouldn't avoid any groups at the firm.
Bump -- what are exits like? How is the dealflow verticalized?
Top group at the firm and a reputable group on the street after GS/MS as it continues to gain market share.
Hours are a function of how busy it is, and all coverage groups are busy esp with in house M&A within each coverage.
Haha you are funny
I can assure you this is not accurate. Decent deal flow? yes. Mostly buyside LBO financings from what I've seen, which is great experience. Top of the street behind GS/MS/Qatalyst? Definitely not. Very sweaty group, esp compared to M&T which is known to be a lifestyle group.
Congrats on first round at Barclays Tech
Barclays tech has had a significant turnaround over the past couple of years. Used to be known as a pitch sweatshop. Now a top group within software, payments, and other verticals. NY group is particularly good. Just today, was announced they're serving as exclusive financial advisor to Thoma Bravo on the QAD deal. Not a lifestyle group, but can't really think of any strong tech group that is. Impressive exits, strong junior culture, and obviously get the in house M&A and protected Saturdays that all Barclays groups do.
any info on exits
one exited to Symphony
NY has had MF/UMM exits in current class and last few years.
Permira x2, Francisco Partners, AKKR, STG, Serent, Searchlight Partners, DCVC and many other small shops (last 3 years)
Agree on the turnaround but definitely not "top". GS and MS could run circles around them in any vertical and I haven't even mentioned Q or JPM.
But perhaps Barclays tech is in the running for the best of the rest
Anyone know timeline for Barclays menlo?
I'm an analyst at barclays. I went through the group placement process and networked with the tech group. Ultimately chose to sign with a different group but I liked the tech group overall. All the analysts are really friendly and down to earth. I could definitely see myself working with them late at night and they seemed like fun people. However, they were very upfront with the fact that they work a lot and it can get very busy. One of the analysts I talked to mentioned some recent exits from the class before him, and he rattled off some big names (I specifically remember Carlyle being mentioned). It does seem like they are one of the 2 groups that work the most (the other being industrials), but I think if you're really interested in tech and you don't mind working more than other coverage groups at barclays, then Barclays tech would be a solid option.
For me personally, I just didn't think the hours were worth it when there were more highly regarded groups with better hours.
Any updates on this group? How does it compare to other tech groups in nyc?
Stinky
Reviving a bit of an old thread but how does the comp look in this group at Barclays? At the associate and VP levels if there are any insights? What about culture (esp at mid - senior level bankers) and the mix of work.
Appreciate any insights!
All I can say is that the tech at Barclays is horrible, IT is ok but Jesus Christ everything is so slow and it stakes forever to boot up the VDI sometimes and it's just a mess, very unfortunate given the bank itself is a great to place to work at, but the tech is horrendous
Huge issue with multiple BBs, with not much improvement since the start of the pandemic which is ridiculous
Omg the VDI.. you definitely work at Barc haha
For tech banks they play in the same field as BAML, CS and Citi. Lots of IPOs, lots of debt raises, lots of LBO financing (acting as the advisor for top buyout funds but really just providing financing). Fastest growing tech IPO practice on the street. Think they are in 4th place for the last few years ahead of where they used to be. M&A is pretty frequent as well but MS/QT/GS often take the mega M&A deals in the tech space. Strong in semiconductors but software and internet are still very very common. Very active deal-flow-most analysts spend a big majority of their time on live deals. Pretty well rounded experience as most analysts leave having worked on almost elements of banking. Culture is pretty fantastic as 100% of the analysts are good, fun, down-to-earth people and mid levels are very helpful and invest a lot of time teaching the analysts. You can see a difference when mid-levels lateral in. Some disconnect between seniors and juniors but I think that is common in BBs
Hello all just checking if anything has changed since last post? How are they doing?
Much weaker, and many top seniors lost to UBS in Tech(top defined as rainmakers and other dudes with global or Americas head or sector head titles). A lot of the senior MD's left and were either not replaced or replaced with MM mds of worse quality.
Other guy is wrong. The SF team announced several large deals lately. Obviously not as strong as Q/GS/MS but still looks strong from the outside. Friends at the firm in SF/Chi really like it there.
Dude go look at the list of Barclays Tech MD's who left in the past like 6-8 months with Marco Valla. There are a dozen+ including some with the aforementioned senior titles(aka. verified rainmakers). I never said they lost everyone or they have no deal flow, I just said they are weaker now. Also of note : all of those deals were old MD's, literally none were from new MD's. Maybe ask your friends more about their experience before commenting especially when the person you are responding to literally works at that firm.
Steer clear of this group—numerous associates left recently due to toxic culture in the NY office
