BB IBD Summer in Hong Kong to NY Full time

Hope everyone had a restful thanksgiving!

Recently signed an offer for a non GS/MS BB in Hong Kong for summer 25. I've seen some older threads on this topic, but was curious if anyone had insights as to if it's doable to transfer from HK after the summer to NY for full time. I'm an American citizen so sponsorship wouldn't be an issue.

Would really appreciate any insights at all -- also happy to connect with fellow incoming HK SAs. Cheers!

Based on the most helpful WSO content, here are some insights regarding transferring from a BB IBD Summer Analyst position in Hong Kong to a full-time role in New York:

  1. Language Skills: Proficiency in Chinese, particularly Mandarin, is highly valued in Hong Kong. Candidates with elite Mandarin language abilities often have an edge in securing return offers.

  2. Networking: Networking is crucial but can be challenging. It's often more effective to connect with individuals who have a similar educational background or who have studied abroad. Randomly emailing without common ground may not yield positive results.

  3. Recruitment Process: The recruitment process in Hong Kong can differ from that in New York. Some financial institutions in Hong Kong may not have a structured "intern-to-full-time" recruitment pipeline, which can make transitions more complex.

  4. Citizenship and Visa: As an American citizen, you won't face sponsorship issues, which is a significant advantage when considering a transfer to New York.

  5. Market Conditions: The financial market conditions can impact hiring and transfer opportunities. For instance, during the height of the COVID pandemic, some firms experienced headcount freezes, affecting full-time recruitment.

  6. Company Policies: Each bank may have different policies regarding internal transfers. It's advisable to discuss your intentions with your manager or HR early on to understand the feasibility and process.
