BB OC team choice

Hi guys, I will have to choose team preferences for a BB off-cycle in London. So far I've only worked in generalist teams so I'm a bit up in the air.

Ideally I would like a team that is the most balanced between deals prestige/learning curve/WLB/exit opps.

I've talked to a few people inside from different teams but they have very mixed opinions probably given by the different importance they place on prestige/WLB/personal preference, so I'm struggling to get a well-formed idea. Probably, for the industries I have already worked on, I am for now more inclined to choose one between HC, TMT/Tech or Industrials but I am ready to change my mind.

My doubts are:
- Do the skills you acquire in one team really change that much compared to another? Obviously the difference between for example TelCo and Consumer is substantial but instead for other more similar teams is the difference so marked?
- How much does the choice of a team then influence the exit opportunities? I am quite tech inclined, I am considering VC or startups for the future (besides PE/CD). Do my chances go way down if I don't choose the TMT/Tech team?
- Does the choice of the team heavily impact the chances of going into MF/UMM PE by choosing teams that are not sexy in PE?
- Given the climate of uncertainty at this time, is it important to choose a very active team so that there is a better chance that there will be headcount to convert the internship?

Any advice/criticism is welcome, thanks fellas.

Hey there, fellow finance enthusiast! You've got some great questions there, and I'm here to help you navigate through them.

  1. Skills across teams: While the core skills you acquire in investment banking - financial modeling, valuation, due diligence - are largely the same across teams, the industry knowledge and network you build can vary significantly. For example, if you're in a TMT team, you'll get a deep dive into the tech, media, and telecom sectors, which could be quite different from what you'd learn in a Healthcare or Industrials team.

  2. Influence on exit opportunities: Your team can influence your exit opportunities to some extent. If you're interested in VC or startups, having experience in a TMT/Tech team could be beneficial as you'd have a better understanding of the industry and potentially more relevant connections. However, it's not a hard and fast rule - plenty of people transition into VC/startups from other teams as well.

  3. Impact on PE chances: While some teams might be more 'in demand' by PE firms due to the nature of their deals, it's not a deal-breaker. What matters more is the deal experience you gain and the skills you develop.

  4. Choosing an active team: In uncertain times, being in an active team could potentially increase your chances of receiving a full-time offer. However, it's also important to consider where your interests lie and where you see yourself in the future.

Remember, there's no one-size-fits-all answer here. It's about finding the right balance between your interests, career goals, and the opportunities available. Good luck with your decision!
