BB Operations vs Big 4 Accounting

In my eyes, they're both pretty boring, but I wanna look at backups..

What in your opinion wins out in each of:

  1. Starting salary (including bonus)
  2. Long term wage growth (my guess would be accounting but I dont know much)
  3. Competitiveness to get in (with 3.5 GPA)
  4. Exit opportunities to less monotinous jobs

I tried searching this but I couldnt find a thread where these issues were adressed between ops and accounting..

Yeah I wasnt sure which one to put it in, but 'other careers' was full of stuff that was way off (a thread about pre-med, earning money online etc.), and Operations is still related to IB.

  1. BB Op
  2. Assuming you stay in the same firm and the same role but just moving up, probably Big 4 accounting
  3. Both are easy
  4. With Big 4 accounting, I think you can go the CPA, finance manager, controller, then CFO type path. Not sure about BB Op

I think getting Big4 accounting is still a lot easier than getting BB Ops. I know kids at my Ivy that were turned down for interviews for BB Ops analyst gigs despite having 3.4+ GPA.

On the other hand, kids from my high school who barely knew how to spell their names and went to total non-targets got offers from Big4 accounting.

People on this board assume that BB back office gigs are really easy to get, but in this economy, even those jobs aren't easy to get for many people. Let's keep in mind that a shit load of college grads across the nation are either unemployed or waiting tables.

RoamerDo you mean Big 4 accounting... as in the finance department .... ? or Audit ?

Big 4 Audit.

Thanks for the responses, gave me some stuff to think about, Im asking this as Im trying to decide between an accounting and finance major..

MagicKarpStarting salary is higher in BB Ops, but seriously, you should choose Big 4 Accounting. Big 4 Accounting might be slightly harder to get into, but still easy. There is an upside and actual exit ops (CFO).
runthetown With Big 4 accounting, I think you can go the CPA, finance manager, controller, then CFO type path.

It seems as though you could have a better long-term career in finance coming from a non-target by majoring in accounting as opposed to finance?

I would also like to add that MagicKarp has the greatest avatar I have ever seen.

Bro just do both, if you're just entering college you should be able to get a degree in both finance and accounting in 4 yrs. Also. Big 4 accounting hires finance majors and BB Ops hires accounting majors, this is to illustrate the fact that your major will not exclude/include you in these positions. Focus on "networking" and really learning what you want to do in business and your major won't really matter (unless u want to do some ENGR or STEM job, which is not what I'm referring to here).

I wish I could, but double major is not an option at my school... If thats the case maybe I should choose the one in which I can maintain a high GPA?
