So I'm interning in S&T at a BB this summer in credit trading. I have to say it kind of sucks. Most of us don't even get our own desks and computer. We are expected to sit on a chair for 12 hours a day with pretty much nothing to do but read academic books and ask questions of the traders (who are all pretty busy and not all that interested). There is a ton of stuff to learn, but you never really get a chance to get into everything. The return offer is pretty much based on how well you network/show off to these people since you do nothing else. Anyone else go through this? IBD work might be menial, but at least you do stuff doing the day.

I've heard the same things about sales and trading internships. It's not like they are going to let you inside the decision process of trading. They expect you to want to learn and show drive to come back and really start full time after college.

I thought I would have a computer and be given interesting assignments to complete. Its amazing when people come on here to share stuff/get info. People just go at them. I'm not bitching that I got the internship, I'm just saying its not really very productive the way they do it. In fact, its a pretty long damn day when you just sit doing nothing.
Whats there to be thankful about? I busted my ass and earned it on my own. Theres more to life than simply getting the next month's rent.

My first internships were similarly meaningless (not S&T), but I got to learn about the businesses I was in and actually have a few conversations with people about their roles. You also get a sense of the work culture in that industry / team.
The point isn't for you to learn technical knowledge, or to do work, rather to get socialised into the group and to give you an idea of what the job is actually like by observing professionals and for others to do their due diligence on you in case they end up giving you an offer... They may also want to see if you have what it takes to be an obedient little monkey...
