Benefits of college/hs friends career-wise?

I am all for having a bunch of great friends for your social life and to help each other out in life issues.

What I'm wondering about is how likely will your regular (not inner-circle) friends and acquaintances influence or help you out career-wise- particularly in investment banking- down the road?

If you have enough great friends already, is it worth the effort to befriend random people (such as the nerdy-looking types) that you may not keep in touch with in the future?

Wow! I can already tell you will go far in IB. With your attitude I would be more worried about keeping the friends you already have. You should just leave everyone else alone. I mean if they can't help you with your career then they are not worthy of meeting you.

"Greed, in all of its forms; greed for life, for money, for love, for knowledge has marked the upward surge of mankind. And greed, you mark my words, will not only save Teldar Paper, but that other malfunctioning corporation called the USA."

so you guys are basically saying that its ok to use (read: "network with") all the adults for career advancement but it is completely immoral to do the same with people your own age... makes complete logical sense.

Its the fact that he even asked a question that makes it bad...

What!?!? NO thats not what we are saying at all. What we are saying is that you should go out and befriend anyone and everyone who could be a help you at any point in your future. Regardless of age. That is pretty much the definition of networking. Next time please save us and yourself the trouble and Google it.

But honestly after hearing you even ask such an obvious question plus talk about certain guys working in IB as quote"nerdy- looking types" I can already tell you that you should just drop any dreams of working as an investment banker because you just won't fit in and have little chance of making it that far.

p.s. I agree this site has been slipping. They need to do something about the trolling and just downright retarded threads like these.

given your machiavellian tendencies you will make it far in ib! Well done OP!

This thread plus thread about marrying women from poor backgrounds, combined with all the trolling, I think WSO is done :(

If you went to Queerfield then you can count on this being a huge factor in your life. That is because of the extreme connectedness and status of the alums and the fact that they only hang out with eachother because the rest of the people who know them think they are douches.
