Best opportunities for Sophomore summer
Hi everyone,
I'm currently a rising Sophomore at a semi-target interested in IB interning at a Big 4 copmany in the tax division. I have solid grades (3.95+), lots of involvement on campus in finance and consulting organizations, and attended quite a few networking events on-campus, but have realized that sophomore BB IB is pretty much impossible unless you're a URM (which I'm not).
I was wondering what some options would be for spending my sophomore summer (2020) as I would love to continue to pursue IB and position myself best for junior year recruiting. Also wondering when I should start working on finding an internship for sophomore summer. I'm also from Austin, TX so would also appreciate if anyone could recommend reaching out to any local shops that would take sophomores.
Thanks everyone, would appreciate any and all advice!
Wait, is URM Under-represented minority? You are obviously trolling
Yes about URM. Happy to clarify whatever you're confused about, but I'm not trolling lol
URM has nothing to do with recruting. If you can't get an internship you're probably just a weak candidate. What semi-target uni is in Austin cause I dont think there is one.
You just need to go after a position that sets you up well for IB. Anything that teaches you how to use excel and analyze financial statements.
Shoot for a IB internship at a boutique in DC, Richmond or New York/SF if you can.
Also, you should go after corporate finance / M&A internships at a large fortune 500 company.
Here's a list of Texas Investment Banks (DTX, ATX, SATX, etc): https://www.axial.net/forum/companies/texas-investment-banks/
Maybe you could find an alum or two at one of these shops. If not, there is always cold calling.
Dimensional Fund Advisors (DFA) is a well-respected investment management firm out of Austin. I know for a fact that they take sophomores. Would be a good option if you can't find IB experience.
Thank you so much, this is very helpful! Will take a look.
I'm at a F15 in corporate finance this summer as a sophomore, and it has set me up very well in interviews.
I would love to do this actually, how did your recruiting process work?
