Best Use of a Summer

I am a current Sophomore Econ at a target state school. Just a quick question - I have two summers with which to play around with. Of course the second summer will be (hopefully) a banking internship, but for this summer I have some freedom.

I am hoping to study abroad, and I used the search feature (lol) and found that this is generally a good decision, but I am wondering if it is still a good idea if the study abroad program is not directly related to finance/economy?

Additionally, would there be a better use of the summer? Barring another banking internship, which various factors prevent me from getting this year.

Thanks!

How exactly do you expect to land a banking internship, if you have no relevant experience from the summer before? The only scenario I could imagine that working is if you did some relevant school year internship, but that's a pain and there aren't quite as many.

I'm not saying it's necessarily a bad thing to enjoy your summers, but understand that if you really want banking, then you need to do something to show your interest (beyond just joining the finance/investing club...). Studying abroad is a good thing, but ideally you should do it during the school year, so you can get some experience on your resume. Also, don't study abroad junior year spring semester or senior year fall semester, as that's when the bulk of recruiting occurs.

Well, I am not 100% sure, so that is why I am asking.

I have conducted rather extensive research on getting in, and it doesn't SEEM to be a universal that students have internships before getting a banking internship - is this correct? From what I have seen, study abroad is a great talking point, but I can see how there might be better uses. Any details?

For what its worth, I have (and will have many times more) tons of campus involvement, which is of course not nearly a be-all-and-end-all but is easily spinnable for interviews and resume.

Thanks again, I appreciate it!

Yeah man, this should definitely not be thought of as a 'free' summer. Either get into a regional boutique, BB asset management firm, BB PWM, or corporate finance.

Previous banking experience goes a long way in the junior SA interviews. Not only does it get you in the door, but your experience should help you ace the interview.

I use "free" liberally...just like I say also that I am "free", wherein we all know...oh wait, this isn't a philosophy board.

I see. I will likely have an in with a corporate finance job for the summer, so that is definitely good.

Any other thoughts? Is summer study abroad generally a no no?

Get a job bud. If I'm not playing resume roulette, what you did sophomore summer is definitely one of the things I look for, especially if you dont have relevant finance experience elsewhere (freshman summer or school year internship). For your life experience, studying abroad is great, but I wouldn't care to hear you spin that experience into why you now want to do banking.

Probably isn't the end of the world if I don't do study abroad, get some extra time with family and friends...that I won't have in banking :P

Any particular hierarchy to the various finance internships? As I mentioned I will likely have a corp finance internship, but is anything else viewed better?
