Best way to answer "Do you have a group you are interested in"?

Interviewers typically ask which coverage/product group I'm interested in. Should I say the group my interviewer is in even if I'm not that interested in it? For me, it doesn't really matter which group

I think you need to name something you’re interested in because if you say something non-committal about how you’re interested in everything you risk coming across as robotic, and if you just say the group of your interviewer you risk just sounding like a kiss ass, especially if you can’t back it up.

I would always name a group I was actually interested in, but keep the door open to others. This is basically my answer- “I’m very interested in health care because I am minoring in biology and have always been interested in medicine, and last summer I interned at a HC focused hedge fund. However, there are other groups i find really cool that I haven’t been exposed to as much but am interested in learning more about, like industrials and tech”.

At the end of the day though, you want to give a real answer here. If you don’t want to work in FIG, saying you’re interested in Fig because you’re getting interviewed by a FIG associate could end up landing you in the FIG group, so just tell the truth about what group you want
