BOCCONI AFM for IB

Hi everyone,

I have been admitted to the MSc in Accounting and Financial Management at Bocconi, but I couldn’t get into the MSc in Finance.

My goal is to start a career in IB (ideally at a BB) in either London or Milan, and I’m wondering how realistic that is coming from AFM instead of Finance.

Is it doable to break into IB (BB or strong boutiques) from AFM?
Are there noticeable differences in recruiting outcomes vs the Finance MSc?
If anyone has attended the program or has friends/colleagues who did, I’d really appreciate if you could share:

  • Placement in IB (London/Milan)
  • How the program is perceived by banks
  • Whether it makes sense to try to transfer to Finance later on

Any insights or personal experience would be super helpful.
Thanks in advance!

Breaking into Investment Banking (IB) from Bocconi's MSc in Accounting and Financial Management (AFM) is definitely possible, but there are some key considerations to keep in mind:

1. Placement in IB (London/Milan)

  • Based on the most helpful WSO content, Bocconi has a strong reputation in Europe, particularly in Italy and London, for placing students into IB roles. While the MSc in Finance is the flagship program for IB placement, the AFM program can still provide opportunities, especially if you leverage Bocconi's extensive alumni network and on-campus recruiting (OCR).
  • For Milan, the AFM program should position you well, as Italian banks and boutiques are familiar with Bocconi's programs. For London, the MSc in Finance might have a slight edge due to its more finance-focused curriculum, but AFM graduates have also successfully landed roles in BBs and strong boutiques.

2. Differences in Recruiting Outcomes vs MSc in Finance

  • The MSc in Finance is more tailored to IB, with a curriculum that includes advanced financial modeling, valuation, and capital markets, which are directly relevant to IB roles. This program also tends to attract more recruiters targeting IB.
  • The AFM program, while still rigorous, leans more toward accounting and financial management, which might make it slightly less appealing for IB recruiters. However, this can be mitigated by taking electives in finance, networking aggressively, and gaining relevant internships.

3. Program Perception by Banks

  • Banks are familiar with Bocconi as a target school, so the program name (AFM vs Finance) is less critical than your overall profile. Strong grades, relevant internships, and networking will matter more.
  • That said, the MSc in Finance might carry slightly more weight for IB roles, especially in London, due to its direct alignment with the skills required in the industry.

4. Transferring to MSc in Finance

  • Transferring to the MSc in Finance later on could be a good move if you feel the AFM program limits your opportunities. However, this might depend on Bocconi's internal policies and your academic performance. It's worth discussing this option with the program office early on.

5. Actionable Tips for Breaking into IB from AFM

  • Leverage Bocconi's Network: Attend career fairs, alumni events, and networking sessions to connect with professionals in IB.
  • Gain Relevant Experience: Secure internships in IB, M&A, or related fields during your studies. Even a boutique internship can help you break into larger firms later.
  • Tailor Your Profile: Take finance-focused electives, participate in finance-related extracurriculars (e.g., investment clubs), and prepare for technical interviews.
  • Excel in Academics: Strong grades will help you stand out, especially if you're competing with MSc in Finance students.
  • Prepare for Interviews: Use resources like the WSO IB Prep Pack to master technical and behavioral questions.

Final Thoughts

While the MSc in Finance might offer a more direct path to IB, the AFM program at Bocconi is still a strong platform, especially if you take proactive steps to align your profile with IB requirements. Many successful IB professionals have come from non-traditional programs, so focus on building a strong resume, networking, and acing interviews.

Honestly, there is no major difference in recruiting between the two. The Finance program may be perceived as slightly stronger in terms of rankings and similar metrics, but in my experience it is the Bocconi brand that matters more than any real difference between AFC and Finance. Especially if you are open to Milan, there is no concern at all, as many AFC students go into banking roles there.

Have exactly same question here. Got admitted to AFM & IM, wondering if it’s doable to break into IB from these two programs

Mind if I ask why AFM is way better than IM for IB? I heard most IM students are not really keen on IB recruiting, but the program itself is more prestigious than AFM in London. So if you already have finance knowledge from bachelor, choosing IM can be a differentiating factor. Do correct me if I’m wrong.

IM is indeed more prestigious, but I think AFM is slightly better for IB specifically, because you actually study a lot of the material you'll need once you start working in a bank. I’m not sure it’s worth choosing IM even if you did a bachelor in finance. Personally, I did a bachelor in management and I’m quite tired of it so AFM feels like a better fit for me.

Excellent program. Quality of placement compared to the MSc in Finance is not due to the course.
