BofA Office Mobility Help!!

Sophomore here from a non target who just received an offer from BofA IB. Only thing is I’m being placed into NYC, and ultimately I want to end up in LA FT. How possible is an office transfer after the internship assuming I perform really well?

Additionally, if that’s not likely - would it be ultimately better to decline and keep recruiting? I know that’s also a risk but I have huge chanced a to land in debt at JPM and also an internship in PE (referrals at both places), which would both be in LA.

Any advice would be really really appreciated - thank you so much.

Based on the most helpful WSO content, transferring offices within a bank like BofA after an internship is not impossible, but it can be challenging. Here are some key points to consider:

  1. Office Transfers Post-Internship:

    • Office transfers are generally rare and depend on the bank's needs, your performance, and your networking efforts.
    • You would need to build strong relationships with people in the LA office during your internship and express your interest in transferring tactfully. However, keep in mind that such moves are not guaranteed.
  2. Declining and Continuing to Recruit:

    • Declining a BofA NYC offer to pursue other opportunities is a significant risk, especially as a non-target candidate. BofA NYC is a strong platform, and securing a return offer there could open doors to LA or other locations later in your career.
    • If you have solid referrals and confidence in landing offers at JPM or a PE internship in LA, it might be worth considering. However, weigh the certainty of your current offer against the uncertainty of future opportunities.
  3. Alternative Strategy:

    • Accept the BofA NYC offer, perform exceptionally well, and leverage the experience to lateral into an LA role later. Networking and maintaining strong performance will be critical in making this transition.

Ultimately, the decision depends on your risk tolerance and how confident you are in securing the other opportunities. If you value certainty and the prestige of a BofA NYC internship, it might be better to accept and strategize for a future move to LA.

Take the BofA IB offer–already lucky to have gotten it from a non-target.

Understand that the LA IB scene has significantly fewer seats than NYC, and probably the lowest out of any T1 city that have EB/BB presence
