BP IST Program to FT IBD

Hi guys, I just received an offer from BP IST in the Chicago office. My original plan was to do BB IBD but I didn't really perform well at superdays. Would you guys recommend taking the BP IST offer and then try to do FT recruiting or should I keep searching for other internship opportunities? Any help is appreciated!

If you are interested in oil trading there is no better program in the world. If you don't want to move phys oil, the look for something else. in the IST program you will likely start doing a year or 18mo worth of analysis and risk management before moving into a scheduling/operations role. Hopefully at the end of the program, you will be able to earn a seat on a trading bench, be it crude, products, natty, or maybe you find something else you like along the way. Such as operations or doing full time market analysis. It is an absolutely stellar launching point, especially if you want to move onto a place like Vitol, Glencore, or Trafi. If you do get to trade, the books are huge and can be the promised land.

But if your dream is do IBD... not at all related to BP IST or physical trading at all... then do that. If I had the chance to do a program right out of school again, I would absolutely do BP IST.

Is Chevron any good? Does CVX also exit to Trafi, Glencore, Vitol, etc.? I received an offer for their IST group here in Houston, still weighing options.

I don't think you can go wrong at any integrated major IST program. Shell's is very tough or nearly impossible to get into from the outside. As far as CVX goes, it is a great company, with very professional folks. They are not as trading oriented as BP, which is very trading oriented. They are closer to XOM, which is really most oriented to optimizing supply and output based on the structure of the molecule, rather than the commercial opportunity. That said, great company, and I am sure it would be a great experience, I just haven't crossed paths with many of their IST folks.
