Bristol 1st year - will I get spring weeks?

just about to enter bristol uni studying politics and economics and am planning on applying to spring weeks in the upcoming months. My understanding is that the first screening is cv (including university). Does my cv have to be amazing to make up for the fact I don’t go to LSE or Oxbridge etc? Obvs I will make it as good as possible anyway, but I am worried as I don’t have a wide number of experiences, particularly in finance. Pls help

Based on previous WSO threads, here are some insights and advice for your situation:

  1. CV Importance:

    • Your CV is indeed a critical component of the application process. While attending a top-tier university like LSE or Oxbridge can be advantageous, it is not the only factor that determines success in securing a spring week.
  2. Application Timing:

    • Applying early can be beneficial. As mentioned in the knowledge base, applications are often reviewed in chronological order, and quotas for certain universities or subjects can fill up quickly. Therefore, submitting your application as soon as the window opens might increase your chances.
  3. CV Content:

    • Highlight any relevant experiences you have, even if they are not directly related to finance. Leadership roles, volunteering, retail jobs, and any insight days you have attended can all add value to your CV.
    • If you lack finance-specific experience, consider joining university societies related to finance or economics as soon as possible. This can help bolster your CV and demonstrate your interest in the field.
  4. Balancing CV and Application Timing:

    • There is a trade-off between applying early and waiting to gain more experience. Based on the highest-ranked content on WSO, it might be wise to apply early with the best CV you can create at the moment. You can always update your CV with new experiences and reapply if necessary.
  5. Networking:

    • Networking can also play a crucial role. Attend events, reach out to alumni, and connect with professionals in the industry to gain insights and potentially secure referrals.

In summary, while attending a top-tier university can be beneficial, a well-crafted CV that highlights your experiences and demonstrates your interest in finance, combined with early application and effective networking, can significantly enhance your chances of securing a spring week.

You’ve got to make your CV the best it can be (so no typos, correct format, quantify your impact etc.) even if it’s just a couple of retail jobs and nothing too serious.

Get people at your uni who did springs to help. A good number of semi targets are at BB/EB springs now so just try your best. Are you not going to try because you don’t go to Oxbridge/LSE?
