British Citizen with UK Degree - Applying to New York Analyst Roles

What are the chances of securing a first year analyst job in New York as a British Citizen with an undergrad degree from the UK (either an Economics and Management BA from Oxford, or a Finance or Economics BSc from the LSE, with a first or 2:1 in the degree)?

Would the Visa situation make this significantly harder than getting a job in the City/Canary Wharf?

Additionally what are the chances of securing a summer internship in New York in the same situation?

Thanks in advance for all responses.

The way i see it is this: they have no reason to hire you to their NYC office over an applicant from one of the Ivy leagues in US, assuming you don't have any strong connections to anyone there.

If your dream is to work in the NYC, a good option is to work for an american bank in their London office and transfer over through internal mobility after a couple of years. Alternatively do an American MBA after your analyst stint.

Does it really have to be an American bank though? Because I've heard that analysts at European banks can transfer over for a year or so?

When you put it that way, i guess its silly of me to assume only American banks have internal mobility. However the people i know who have made the London to NYC move happened to be from American banks, which is probably why i said that.

To OP -- you probably have to do your research and see which firms have better internal mobility.

This seems to be the main route. I know several who have lateraled as 3rd year Analysts or 1st year Associates and 1 who lateraled as a 2nd year Analyst. As said, why would they bother hiring you when they can just hire an Ivy League kid who wont require sponsorship?

From what I have seen, the American banks seem to have better internal mobility, but this is based on a small sample size.
