Can Non-Athlete LAC Students Land Offers?
I go to Bowdoin and noticed that everyone in my year who landed an IB offer is an athlete. Is there any hope for non-athletes even at top LACs? Feels like a rigged system.

Based on the most helpful WSO content, non-athletes at top liberal arts colleges (LACs) like Bowdoin can absolutely land offers in investment banking (IB). While it's true that athletes often have a strong presence in IB recruiting due to traits like competitiveness, work ethic, and charisma, being a non-athlete does not inherently disadvantage you. Here's why:
Demonstrating Work Ethic and Competitiveness: Athletes often stand out because their sports background showcases these qualities. However, you can highlight similar traits through other experiences, such as internships, leadership roles, or academic achievements.
Networking is Key: Many LACs, including Bowdoin, have strong alumni networks in finance. Leveraging these connections, especially with alumni who are not athletes, can help you stand out.
Self-Selection at LACs: As noted in WSO threads, students at smaller LACs may be less inclined to pursue IB compared to peers at larger universities. This means fewer candidates overall, which can work in your favor if you position yourself well.
Focus on Your Unique Strengths: Banks value diverse backgrounds. If you can demonstrate charisma, intellectual curiosity, and a strong work ethic through your resume and interviews, you’ll have plenty of opportunities.
In short, while athletes may have a visible presence in IB recruiting at LACs, non-athletes who strategically build their profiles and network effectively can absolutely land offers.

I'm pretty sure like 50% of the Bowdoin population are athletes, and the fact that athletes make up a large part of the student body holds true at any of the top LACs, so that's probably why it seems that way. Also being an athlete shows good commitment and hardwork so banks tend to like that. Plus, I don't know if this is 100% true but I think IB and finance in general just attracts athletes and people that play sports in general.
Have a friend at Bowdion, non-athlete / non-nepo but works like an absolute dog, going the skip-banking route due to same reasons as yourself. He has had success so far so maybe follow in his footsteps? certainly a gamble tho
