I'm Canadian, have a FT offer at top Canadian bank. I want to lateral to BB / EB in NYC say 6 months to 12 months in; obviously have good GPA and am aware only some places sponsor

What's the best way to do this? Similar - just network and obv study technicals? Anyth to do differently?

Thanks!

To lateral from a top Canadian bank to a BB/EB in NYC, here's what you need to know based on the most helpful WSO content:

1. Networking is Key

  • Start Early: Begin building relationships with bankers in NYC as soon as possible. Use LinkedIn Premium to connect with alumni from your school or Canadians who have successfully made the move.
  • Leverage Existing Connections: If your current bank has relationships with U.S. banks or if you’ve worked on deals involving U.S. firms, use that as a conversation starter.
  • Be Strategic: Focus on groups or firms that are known to sponsor visas. Not all BBs/EBs are open to sponsorship, so prioritize those that are.

2. Position Yourself as a Strong Candidate

  • Highlight Your Canadian Experience: Emphasize the transferable skills you’ve gained at your current bank. Deal experience, technical skills, and client exposure are all valuable.
  • Address the Visa Issue: Be upfront about needing sponsorship but frame it positively. For example, highlight your commitment to the role and the value you bring.
  • Know Your "Why": Be prepared to explain why you want to move to NYC. Tie it to career growth, deal exposure, or specific industry expertise.

3. Timing and Process

  • 6-12 Months is Ideal: Most lateral opportunities open up after bonuses are paid (June/July). Start networking and preparing well in advance.
  • Unstructured Process: Lateral hiring is less formal than on-cycle recruiting. Many roles are filled through internal referrals, so networking is critical.
  • Monitor Job Postings: Check platforms like Indeed and LinkedIn daily for lateral openings. Some roles may not be posted publicly, so your network is crucial.

4. Technical and Behavioral Prep

  • Stay Sharp on Technicals: Be ready to discuss your deal experience in detail. Know your valuation methodologies, financial modeling, and market trends.
  • Master Behavioral Questions: Have a clear, concise story about why you’re making the move. Avoid generic answers and focus on your unique value proposition.

5. Consider the U.S. Market

  • Understand the Landscape: Familiarize yourself with trends in the U.S. banking market. This will help you tailor your pitch and show you’re serious about the move.
  • Be "U.S. Caliber": Demonstrate that your skills and experience are on par with U.S. candidates. This includes being polished, confident, and well-prepared.

6. Additional Tips

  • Engage with Recruitment Firms: Some firms specialize in cross-border placements. Look into programs like "Coming Home" or firms like Vlaad and Co.
  • Stay Discreet: Avoid letting your current employer know about your plans until you have an offer in hand.

By combining networking, preparation, and a clear strategy, you can position yourself for a successful lateral move to NYC. Good luck!
