Canadian Big 5 to US EB/BB lateral process
Looking to move to the states after 1 year of banking experience at big 5 bank. Was wondering what the interview process looks like in terms of networking (getting the interview) & the interview process itself.
Take into account a problem:
- While my team has good deal flow, I'm in a niche industry that is not big in the states. Would love to switch industries once I lateral but was wondering how US firms would look at that / am I pigeon holed?

any comments on visas? does it depend on what you studied in uni?
For that, it would just TN visa if you're Canadian I believe. If not, you would need an H1B which is pretty difficult to get.
Interviewed at some top shops for this year start but none of them are taking a risk with H1B for a fresher/junior, probably only for senior levels. And I got referrals from as high up as you can think.

Why don’t you apply for other jobs in the US? IB isn’t the only high paying job in the US - unlike Canada.
In similar spot (at a Canadian M&A group) what other positions are willing to sponsor and have decent comp? Ive heard good things about LMM PE at a good shop (heard comp and progression is attractive, hours are good, and can be located in LCOL/tax favorable states).
