Career Bankers --> C-Suite Roles?
Seems as though this is a career path taken by some career investment bankers? Is making it to MD/Partner and trying to get into C-Suite a viable career path or if one wants to have a C-Suite job is it better off to get into the corporate as soon as possible?
Examples I've come across in just some quick research:
- Anthony Noto - CEO of SoFi after Partner in GS TMT
- Ned Segal - CFO of Twitter after Partner in GS TMT
- Dara - CEO of Uber after MD at Allen & Co and CEO of Expedia
- Glenn Schiffman - CFO of IAC after SMD at Guggenheim
Very much non-exhaustive list but would be interesting to hear people's thoughts on these type of career paths.
What about c-suite at BB/EB? Career banker or PE/HF experience more valuable?
FIG bankers definitely seem to move into C-suite. See Jonathan Pruzan, CFO of Morgan Stanley and as of just the other day Russ Hutchinson as Chief Strategy Officer at GS (formerly head of FIG M&A)
This is pretty common. The CFO of Luminar worked at Jefferies, MD at JPM became CFO of Peloton. A lot of times people want a banker as a CFO if they don't think the current management is public company ready. It's pretty rare that someone rises through the ranks and eventually becomes a CFO (and these people are usually from the treasurer/controller function if they do).
