Career pivot to banking 27 years in?

Friend of mine has 27 years of experience in a large industry and is currently a SVP. With his role he has had plenty of time working with banks on various matters. Due to management issues he’s thinking of jumping ship and seeing about going into IB, his question was if this is a common thing. I don’t think I’ve ever seen it but would love to hear from others on if this is possible/if they have seen it.
