Centerview Tech Palo Alto/Menlo?
How are these guys? Tech is competitive, and I get the sense that they are hitting below their weight, but would be interested to hear if otherwise.
Seems like a lot of volatility, following the Tidal exit and wondering how they're doing. Are they closing deals? Just a bunch of pitching or actual work being done?
On a more general note, does CVP still pay well? Heard bonuses were down so wondering if these guys even pay at a meaningful premium compared to other EBs.
Centerview's tech group in Palo Alto/Menlo has faced some challenges recently, particularly following the departure of key associates and partners to Tidal Partners. According to insights from WSO threads, this has led to a significant talent drain, especially at the associate level, which is critical for maintaining deal flow and execution. The west coast tech deal flow over the past 12-18 months was reportedly driven by the departing partners, raising concerns about the group's current ability to deliver the strategic advice expected from a boutique like Centerview.
While Centerview is known for its strong M&A practice and premium compensation, there have been mentions of volatility in bonuses, with some suggesting they may not be as high as they once were. However, Centerview still generally pays at a meaningful premium compared to other elite boutiques (EBs), particularly for associates and senior associates. The firm has historically been a top-tier player in terms of compensation, often rivaling megafunds.
In terms of deal activity, the group seems to be in a transitional phase. While Centerview's biotech practice in San Francisco is considered the best on the street, the tech group in Palo Alto/Menlo appears to be recalibrating after the Tidal exit. Whether they are closing deals or primarily pitching remains unclear, but the loss of key talent has likely impacted their ability to execute at the same level as before.
If you're considering joining, it might be worth digging deeper into their current deal flow and speaking with recent hires or insiders to get a clearer picture of the group's trajectory.
