If generalist, then Goldman.
The only way I choose Centerview is if it is a group specific offer that I am interested in or one of their tops. That's just my opinion though.

I find it hilarious that every person who gets an offer at a bank automatically thinks they will be placed in one of that banks top groups. His likely placement is not one of those...he won't know until he meets with them. He could easily get put in industrials.

Third, just because he ended up with a choice between those two (which could be a lie for all I know), doesn't mean that was going to always be the case from the beginning. Everytime someone gets an offer from a bank they automatically assume they're getting put in on of the top groups. Truth is, that assumption is retarded no matter how good your resume or networking skills.

Fact: If you make partner at GS, short of several acts of sheet financial idiocy and perhaps even in spite of them, you will be a multi millionaire. See comment from GoldmanOrBust (who may be biased) above.
% of analysts at GS who make partner....? GS is still GS, but Centerview a great spot, especially if you're weighing quality of life concerns.

investment banking (focus on M&A and some restructuring). they've done some cool deals, but don't know if that makes up for the name
I mean...it completely depends on what you want to do. centerview is a highly respected name in the industry, cranking out some crazy deals right now. and once you're in risk, you'll pretty much be staying in risk going forward, back/mid to front office is a pretty tough transition to make (i think i've only ever heard of 1 person to do it) no point in picking GS for the name, if you're serious about banking, it's about the deals

This is a joke, right? Centerview is one of the most elite banks to work for (arguably better than GS IBD in many ways). They have a tiny analyst class and great deal flow (have you seen the transactions on their website? damn). Plus its boutique, so all m&a and highest comp on the street. Centerview is leagues above GS risk mgt.
