Chances of Breaking into Investment Banking as a Sophomore from a Non-Target School: Summer 2026 Internship
I’m a sophomore at a non-target university with a 3.86 GPA. My only work experience is founding a marketing agency and growing it to $10k in revenue. I also completed one internship at a privately held holding company, which I don’t think is particularly relevant to investment banking.
I know that in a few weeks, most investment banks will start recruiting for summer 2026 internships. Currently, I have nearly eight warm contacts at different bulge bracket and elite boutique firms, with whom I’ve already had coffee chats.
My question is: if I don’t secure an internship in the next few months for summer 2026, what are my chances of breaking into investment banking?
Will I still have a chance to get a 2026 internship later in the recruitment cycle? Or is it realistic to aim for a 2027 investment banking analyst internship next year?
PS: I’ll be doing Deloitte consulting internship Summer 2025 in case that helps for the next year. I’m graduating in May 2027.
Please be as honest and direct as possible.

Key Actions to Take Now:
In summary, while breaking into IB as a sophomore from a non-target is challenging, it’s not impossible. Your GPA, entrepreneurial experience, and Deloitte internship are strong assets. If you don’t secure a 2026 internship, pivot to boutiques or related finance roles and aim for a 2027 IB internship. Keep hustling and networking—it’s a marathon, not a sprint!
