Chasing down associates for everything

It's definitely true that every associate has a different working style, and in turn each analyst/associate working relationship will have a different dynamic.

Most of my associates are very effective and efficient at their jobs, and are good at delegating work / providing feedback. Some others, however, work very differently. I noticed, for instance, that when making decks I'm making every slide. Slides they previously said they'd take on end up being passed to me at the very last minute.

I'll also have to chase them often in responding to emails / requests from other teams, and sometimes I just end up being ghosted. This puts me in a tough position - I know it looks rude to leave the other groups hanging, but I don't want to go above the associate's head and respond. In instances where I've tried to be proactive, it's come to bite me in the ass bc they get mad they didn't review my email before I sent it out.

I'm kind of at a loss on what to do here. This doesn't happen super often day-to-day, but it occurs enough where I find myself in a rather awkward / uncomfortable position. I obviously want to have a positive relationship with my higher-ups and do a good job, but these dynamics are making it hard to do so.

This sounds like an associate who is some combination of lazy, inefficient, overworked/overwhelmed and insecure. You will run into these gems through your career.

The problem with people like this is that no matter how above and beyond you go for them, there is a tendency for the shit to trickle down to you when things go south. Or be blatantly thrown under the bus.

The good news is it sounds like the rest of your team are pretty normal and this person is an outlier. There is honestly nothing you can do to improve your situation with this particular associate other than plan knowing all the work is coming to you. What you can do is build your rep with the rest of the team so if you do get shit on by this person come reviews, there are a larger number of voices disagreeing.

Depends on how many Associates you work with, as well as if reviews are 360.

If you primarily work with them, you gonna have to ignore everyone else and suck up to them for the time being.

If this is one of many, fuck them and go over their head if needed, especially if you have to respond to others who will review you. You can also shit talk them to other Analysts because word gets around and they lose credibility. Bonus if you get 360 reviews, you can shit on them there too. Also, if you feel like you're leaving others hanging, just reply all and say "we're working on it and will circle back," then forward your message to the dumbass with your draft again. Repeat until they either give up and let you send it or actually look at it. You could also put them on blast (directly address them on the chain, "XX, I believe we should be able to get something shortly") where you're also politely throwing them under the bus, but wouldn't recommend until you've developed a rapport.

I have no sympathy for shit fucking associates who don’t trust anyone yet can’t handle anything themselves.
