choice of major

I am a sophomore at a non target top 25 school and I'm hoping to land a job as an IBD analyst after graduation. I did initially want to be an econ major, but now I am a bit worried this path might be deflationary GPA wise.

Would I be more well positioned for recruiting if I chose an easier major, like Political Science, and attained a higher GPA?

I definitely would be able to show interest in finance even if I chose a non econ/finance major, as i have done a PE internship and I am also interning at a boutique this semester.

What do you guys think? Could I swing a Poli Sci major if I have a lot of internships?

any insight would be appreciated

Hey bud, PM me if you want detailed thoughts on the topic.

In my opinion, it depends on the department. Some econ departments are very "econ" if that makes sense; some are more accounting/businessy departments. The exposure to heavy macrotheory is definitely a plus in interviews, it showcases knowledge that most bschoolers might not have if you've put in work towards understanding the economy.

That being said, I'd recommend a liberal arts coupled with econ, not just the liberal arts (also delve into some upper level math/stat if you have the heart; it'll show you're a bit smarter than the rest of the competition). Combinations of majors/minors in these fields one, make you stand out and two, develop skill sets you can showcase during interviews i.e. If I have to read hundreds of pages a week as a philosophy major and write 30pg logically coherent term papers, pitch books and CIMs will be no problem for me

Just my two cents

You can get in with Poli Sci, but all else equal, when I'm looking at resumes, I'd rather take the kid who did Econ. I generally take Poli Sci/soft major GPA's with a grain of salt, and give a little more leeway to quant-heavy majors like physics, math, CS, etc.

If you want to do econ and not have your GPA killed, then just plan your course schedule so that you take your hardest classes after recruiting ends, and make sure to take plenty of easy-A classes as well. Nobody looks at your transcript anyway, except maybe HR to verify you got what you said you got.

I would rather stick with Econ. to get a good gpa, one way is take certain courses over the summer at community college, which the courses there are easier. Maybe you might grad earlier or be able to add a minor like political science.
