Choosing between Semi-Targets and Weak Target Internationally

Hi Everyone, current international high school senior thoroughly interested in IB, and seeking provision on University selection.

Despite being Canadian, I was born and raised in Hong Kong and have lived here for the entirely of my formidable years. Reading WSO has demonstrated to me the importance of attending a Target, and hence why I would appreciate some advice on the matter. As my Ivy bids today did not prove fruitful (only US acceptance was waitlist at Stern), I unfortunately am left to pick between Ivey Business school in Canada (AEO status), St Andrews in the U.K for Financial Economics, and Edinburgh University for Economics and Finance. Which university would provide me with the best options? Or is it seemingly impossible? I am highly motivated to succeed and go the extra mile to do well at these institutions.

Not entirely sure where I would prefer to work... New York and London obviously preferred, but seem exceedingly unlikely/impossible with these options (no right to work in the US). Hence, would Toronto or Hong Kong be possible for a potential BB (have PR in HK, and speak Mandarin/French/English as a white guy)? Or, would I be better suited to take a gap year and reapply? I only suggest the latter as I was under predicted in the other IB, International Baccalaureate, and my grades are likely to end significantly stronger. Apologies about asking, I realize these posts can be really annoying and I hate to be 'that guy' with no targets and a desperate plea for help, but I'm really stressed on my lack of options as my heart is set on IB. Thank you for taking the time to read this, and I look forward to hearing some advice.

If you want to land Toronto BB/EB, Ivey is the right place to do it. Ivey does also occasionally send kids with your visa situation to the U.K., but it would probably make more sense to actually go to a British school if you want to be in London.

Thank you for responding! So you think it’s easier to land a Toronto BB/EB with Ivey then a U.K. BB/EB with Semi Target? At the end of the day don’t really care where I work, would simply take the city with better options.

yes, in canada there's more in your control. In London its completely rng

I would choose Ivey. Uncontested top feeder on Bay Street into the big 5 banks, BBs and EBs and fairly strong representation in NY as well. Certain groups / banks like EVR, GS LA to name a few have consistently hired from Ivey and the school’s alumni network in the US is growing by the year. Have also seen pretty good presence on the buyside as well across UMMs, MFs and HFs. Just maintain a strong GPA, prep hard for your interviews and you should be just fine.

Also, you’re still in high school. Enjoy all the free time you have right now while you still can. Good luck!
