Bump, wondering the same thing. And where does C&R stands in all of this.

Industrials and M&A best groups. Sponsors (called GAM) is pretty good as well. Placement is around April/May and consists of reaching out and doing coffee chats. Start reaching out to analysts/associates in the group you want and build connections in the winter and maintain these connections until spring when placement happens.

It would be a “it depends” type of answer. For me, I rather have a general banking experience at a solid global firm (eg M&A at Citi). As someone that isn’t too clear about what he wants to do in 5 years, I’m sure going to Citi would be very beneficial.

This thread should answer all your questions, but if you don't want to open:

  • M&A / IND for exits, however M&A you will melt from the toxicity; industrials significantly better culture and people
  • C&R / HC / TMT all very underrated on here and are the focus areas for the bank (hiring & investment / great recent momentum)
  • Sponsors historically been good but a lot of senior exits LTM

Hope this helps

Small team (~14 people all in), strong culture that is big on mentorship. Can’t say if Citi is placing more emphasis on the group but from what I heard, the group is a top 3 M&A advisor within the space.

Thank you! Do you have any more insights into the industrials or gam group? Which do you think is overall better

Industrials is stronger for sure. Completed the placement process last year and everyone wanted either M&A or Industrials. Deal flow is very good for industrials, we left the office very late last summer. Heard people in GAM leave around 5/6pm everyday

FSG is not a traditional banking group, their interview process is  different where you’re asked finance & statistics questions. It is best suited for someone who wants to do a blend of stats & finance. Traditional PE exits are off the table, although some people end up in private credit.

If what you really enjoy is stats/CS then the better fit is IB M&A Data Science, which is a far more technical group than FSG. from my understanding, they mainly use data science techniques to calculate financial metrics & off the shelf requests for clients where using DS makes it much easier. Main exits for this group are strategy / data science roles in industry & at the PE firms that are building out investing DS capabilities.

The work in both groups is fundamentally different than traditional IB, but you will enjoy it if you want more of an intellectual challenge. However if what you really enjoy is learning about business then you will likely not find either role satisfying, and should try to lateral to coverage or traditional M&A.

Real estate has a good culture, and will help you recruit for PE by connecting you directly to headhunters. Exits limited to REPE though, but places well within REPE
