Coffee Catchup - Should I be ready for an interview?
Background - I made contact with the MD of a boutique resources IB (~30 employees) and managed to hook up a chat with an associate director and her offsider at a cafe. The chat is both in regards to just learning from their experiences and asking them questions but the MD told me there was a position available.
Although this catchup is at a cafe should I be prepared for an interview? Especially since there will be two of them. Does anyone have any advice in terms of what sort of questions I should ask, the amount of background knowledge I should have on the resources sector etc.?
Thanks for your time.
Prepare as is you were walking into an interview. They're in the drivers seat in terms of conversation (it seems like), stay alert, listen and base your questions off that. Also, keep it a genuine conversation.
Best of luck, op.
They're definitely considering you for a position. Given that there is a position available and two relatively busy people are meeting you for coffee together, I would say that you are going to be evaluated while speaking with them. Relax though man, its just coffee. Just be able to hold a conversation with them, prepare some good questions, show you've done you're research, and sit back.
I think it is generally good advice to consider the first conversation with someone that you do not know personally as an interview just so you put your best foot forward. Remember, first impressions matter, if you cannot make a good first impression with these two (or anyone in a company you first meet), you will not get the opportunity to make a first impression with HR.
